Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
chamber pop, baroque pop, art pop
2019
She created not only an album but also she created a whole journey to go with it. An amazing fusion of sounds was carefully combined for this, with a production that suits the instruments perfectly, while maintaining the carefully dynamic aspect that chamber music. A Lot's Gonna Change starts off with an ambient opening and becomes a soft piano track. She sings about how she wishes she was a child again and learns the life is hard. Andromeda is a very mystical track and is about Natalie's doubt that her love can help her through dark times. Everday is a folk-ish pop anthem which reminds me The Beach Boys, she sings about the ups and downs of life. Something To Believe is another great song and it has chamber folky sounds. Titanic Rising is ambient, and watery interlude that leads to the second half of the album, however, this song is not strong as much as previous songs. The second half of the album goes on a much darker and serious tone starting with Movies. Movies begins with sweeping synths and is about Natalie's love for Movies and wanting to be a star. Near the end the synths are done and speeding violins building up. Mirror Forever is surely the darkest and most experimental song in this album. In the first half there is a fantastic slow guitar solo. Wild Time and Picture me better are the acoustic-type songs of the album. Nearer to Thee is another instrumental piece. It closes the album off with only the soft violins from the beginning of the album that say the journey has ended.
On Titanic Rising, Weyes Blood builds from many different influences, and even though she reaches into the past and nostalgia, the music sounds so fresh. Every sound made me amazed. There's a rich blend of genres at play, and on paper, you'd think that some of them wouldn't work well together, but they do. She combine chamber and baroque pop with a country sound, concluding in dreamy and artsy feelings. Its early days of 2019 but I think the hype is well-deserved, and in time, this album will be seen as one of the essential art pop albums.
