Dorian Electra - Flamboyant bubblegum bass 2019

Flamboyant is the debut, self-aware bubblegum bass album by Dorian Electra. The unrestrained album sees the gender fluid popstar mix classical instruments with heavy metal guitars, futuristic metallic drums and pure pop melodies in the signature Dorian Electra style. “Flamboyant” is a reclamation of a coded term that has historically been used against the queer community in a derogatory way. Dorian is relentless when it comes to poking fun at the masculine ego’s need to be the centre of attention whilst also encouraging a healthy level of confidence and self-love within the way one expresses themselves. The album takes on the ideals of masculinity by shaping and breaking stereotypes. PC Music knows how to do its work, production of this album is good. Bubblegum Bass genre is becoming much more popular and affects classical pop tradition in a good way. Sophie released Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-insides last year which is still the best example of this genre, in Flamboyant, the effects of Sophie's work can be seen but it is an genre issue, no copying. In terms of lyrical structure, this record has songs which have repetitive and referential lyrics. After finished listening, find myself having many of choruses stuck in my head.

In short, for a debut album, it is a great one. It did not make me disappointed, I am excited for Dorian's future projects. Compared to other examples of bubblegum bass albums/mixtapes (i.e. Pop 2 and Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-insides), this record may fall short but it is still a good album.

8/10
