Charly Bliss - Young Enough
power pop, indie pop
2019
Their debut album, Guppy was really good, usually coined 'bubble grunge' because it has the singing/squeaky pop punk vocals but also it's got a lot more guitar and fuzziness.
Guppy was power pop mixing grunge-ish sounds. Young Enough is just power pop with influences of indie pop touches. Eva Hendrick's sharp, and biting lyrics are put at the foreground of most of the songs on the record, but are accented perfectly by the band's 80's tinged, pop instrumentation. This is a very solid pop album and Charly Bliss seem to have pulled of the "pop turn" better than most indie pop bands I can think of currently, but, it still feels like it's been done before.. I'm not mad at them for going in a new direction but I was so excited to have a band playing bubble grunge music they had on Guppy and it feels like it went from something unique to just another indie pop band. That's not to say Young Enough isn't good, but it's not what I would call power pop perfection.
