Katie Dey - Solipsisters
hypnagogic pop
2019
Australian singer Katie Dey released her third long-play Solipsisters and she took eyes on her again and again. After her powerful two albums, especially Flood Network, she develops herself and nearly became more than amazing. She is definetly one of the most representers of hypnagogic pop and indietronica.
For me, the most important aspect of this album I quite appreciate is the clutter of sounds and influences. There were many moments while listening to this that I found myself thinking about other artists like Kate Bush, Boards of Canada, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Dey blends all of these styles into a unique tapestry that doesn't seem wholly organized. Sounds and images pile on top of each other as the songs drunkenly build to their climactic peak. The mixture of sounds is almost therapeutic because there is something imperfect and wonderfully human about her music.
The piece as a whole is a great work of art that I feel gives this lonely and isolated, experimental sound to it. Katie Dey opens the door into her universe and offers a glimpse into another private world. As she defines the edges of her space, she quells her anxieties of feeling trapped with images of protection and comfort. I generally liked this album, and I am sure you gonna like this too.
