Sasami - SASAMI
indie rock, dream pop
2019
On her self-titled debut album, "SASAMI", singer and songwriter Sasami Ashworth who is ex-member of Cherry Glazerr establishes herself as someone worthy of our attention. I first heard about Sasami when Mitski gave her a shout-out on her story, and I can see the similarities between these two artists. Both have a mix of tender ballads and rock songs that beautifully compliment each other. While I like her voice and the atmosphere she creates on this record, I was hoping for something more memorable. She creates reflective bedroom pop through repetitive rhythms and lyrics. This works well on songs like the closing track, Turned Out I Was Everyone which is my favorite song of this record, as the repetition fits the lyrics. The song becomes more meditative as it mulls over the same thought over and over again. I wish she sang a little stronger as well as there are times that the melody feels too cautious. Also, Free (feat. Devendra Banhart) and Adult Contemporary (feat. Soko) are another good songs in this album. I had high hopes for this album, but it just came off a little forgettable except songs I mentioned, which is sad because SASAMI seems like a fun person.
