Jenny Lewis - On the Line soft rock, singer&songwriter 2019

Jenny Lewis is an amazing singer, who i want to gossip with about people, and has so many songs which are anthems of some parts of my life. She has a unique voice and special sense of humor to explain her mind. On the Line is a singer/songwriter record with plenty of great melodies. There's not a moment where the production sounds bad, but also not many moments where one part stands out from the rest. It's just full of solid, above average pop rock tracks. One moment that does stand out is "Dogwood", which starts with a sparse piano melody but crescendos with Jenny's singing to a flourish of guitars, bells, and drums, then back to a slower piano driven finish. It's a lovely emotional peak for the entire album. Another memorable cut is "Red Bull & Hennessy" is more upbeat with a killer guitar solo to finish the song off. "Wasted Youth" and "On the Line" are poppier efforts, while "Do Si Do" is slower and more meditative. All three are good showcases of Jenny's excellent singing. Her talents lie in bringing forth lots of rather specific images of her life. Jenny's voice brings these stories to life and immerses you in them. Some of the slower tracks (i.e. Hollywood Lawn) are a bit boring compared to their brighter counterparts. The production is fine, but when slowed down Jenny's singing isn't as fitting as it is on a poppier track. Overall if you're into pop rock with some lyrical bite, On the Line is absolutely one to check out.

8/10
