Big Thief - U.F.O.F indie folk 2019

Big Thief has had a steady growth since their first album, and this album is the glorious result of years of experimentation, discovery and curiosity. It's hard to describe just how U.F.O.F is so much better than their previous two albums, but the difference, the evolution and growth is clear as day even from just the first few minutes here. The record sounds great, they've clearly spent a lot of time since their last release just honing their craft. The sound is so clear and the mix so dynamic, it's one of those albums that just encompasses you completely. The record feels so focused, pin point precision at each and every turn. It leaves room for you to explore its sonics, to really understand and appreciate how gorgeous it is. Still U.F.O.F, though more experimental than prior releases, keeps it relatively steady, staying on known grounds for the group. It only makes me love it more, as this is the record I've been waiting on them to release. The guitars and drums on this record are understated but sound simply wonderful. Aside from a few monstrous moments (opener 'contact' and penultimate track 'Jenni'), this record revels in the quiet moments, allowing Adrianne Lenker's wispy voice to shine. She sounds fantastic here -- palpable emotion in every line (with wildly creative lyrics to boot). Everything about this record is fantastic: vocals, melodies, lyrics, and the near-perfect playing from every member.

8.5/10
